With over 20 years working in IT and Information Assurance, Mr. Freedman has hands-on experience with the public, private, and government sectors of healthcare networks and systems. Working with both covered entities and business associates, he has conducted HIPAA Security Risk Assessments and taught others how to perform them. He was formerly the CIO and Information Technology Director at a large independent medical practice, has served as a HIPAA Compliance Officer, and managed a team of IT specialists in support of electronic medical records and practice management systems.


Mr. Freedman earned his Masters of Science in Information Systems through Strayer University and a Bachelor of Science in Communications from The University of Miami with a double-major in Speech Communications and History. He has co-authored a book on PCI Compliance and is the Technical Editor of a handbook on IT Regulatory and Standards Compliance. Mr. Freedman also holds some of the leading industry certifications from Microsoft and Cisco and is also a CISSP and PMP. Mr. Freedman is a Certified HIPAA Compliance Officer (CHCO) through the American Institute of Healthcare Compliance, where he serves as an Online Course Manager for the HIPAA Privacy & Security Program.

Ms. Byron is CEO and founder of the American Institute of Healthcare Compliance (AIHC).  Joanne brings over 35 years of clinical and executive health care experience in areas of compliance, coding, documentation improvement, auditing, privacy, and security. She has developed many of the programs offered through this institute and has served as an instructor for these programs as well. Joanne is affiliated with the following organizations in addition to AIHC: AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association), HiMSS (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society), MGMA (Medical Group Management Association), and the Professional Association of Healthcare Coding Specialist (PAHCS).  She has over thirty-five years of experience in health care consulting and administration.  She has served as an expert witness in legal cases and offers her investigative auditing expertise in areas of AR Analysis for Embezzlement, Fraudulent Coding & Detecting Altered Paper and EHR Documentation, Inappropriate EHR Authentication and Detecting Imposters.


As a graduate with honors from St. Augustine Technical Center in 1980 with a diploma in nursing, Joanne continued her education at Lake Erie College in Health Care Administration, obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree through Clayton College, is Certified in Compliance, Auditing, Internal Forensic Auditing, HIPAA, ICD-10, Medical Billing, Collections and Clinical Documentation Improvement.


Katherine Koss-Vyrostek BA, CPC, CPMA, OHCC, CHA, CHCO, CIFHA, ICDCT-CM

Katherine has over 15 years experience in coding, auditing, compliance, and education.  She has served on the Internal Forensic Healthcare Auditor Certification Program Oversight Committee and lectures as a Camp Facilitator for AIHC.  Katherine has also worked with government payers as an auditor and consultant as well as with local physicians, hospital, and clinics.


Katherine earned her bachelor’s degree from Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania.  She is a Certified Professional Coder (CPC); Certified ICD-10-CM Trainer (ICDCT-CM); Certified Healthcare Auditor (CHA); Certified HIPAA Compliance Officer (CHCO); Certified Professional Medical Auditor (CPMA); Certified Internal Forensic Healthcare Auditor (CIFHA); and Officer of Healthcare Compliance, Certified (OHCC).  Her professional affiliations include the American Institute of Healthcare Compliance (AIHC), the National Association of Medical Auditing Specialists (NAMAS), and the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).  




Katie is the director of the advisory services practice at Kraft Healthcare Consulting, LLC, an affiliate of KraftCPAs PLLC, where she focuses on reimbursement and operations. Her job responsibilities consist of reviewing and preparing Medicare and Medicaid cost reports and working with clients on other reimbursement opportunities, such as Disproportionate Share (DSH) and provider-based options. Additionally, Katie performs healthcare operational assessments and operational projects such as reviews of hospital chargemasters and physician fee schedules.


Katie also assists the audit team at KraftCPAs with healthcare-specific financial audits. Prior to joining the KHC team, she interned in the tax department at KraftCPAs.


Melissa Kirshner MPH, CPC, CDEO, CRC, CPC-I, ICDCT-CM/PCS, OHCC, MACRA Proficient, AAPC Fellow

Ms. Kirshner brings to AIHC over 20 years of healthcare experience in the areas of billing, coding, compliance, MACRA, education and software development. She is a former Administrator for both a large health system and billing company in the Detroit area and currently works as an Executive Director of a large physician organization providing compliance and education services to over 500 physicians in the Detroit area.  


Ms. Kirshner earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Anatomy and Physiology from Michigan State University and holds a Masters of Public Health from the University of Michigan. She holds certifications as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC), a Certified Documentation Expert (CDEO) and a Certified Risk Adjustment Coder (CRC)  through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).  Ms. Kirshner is an AAPC Fellow, an AAPC approved instructor and currently serves as the Treasurer of the Novi, Michigan chapter of the AAPC.  She additionally holds the Officer of Healthcare Compliance (OHCC) certification from the American Institute of Healthcare Compliance (AIHC).  Melissa provides instruction for the ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS programs as well as the OHCC program through AIHC.




Scott Mertie leads Kraft Healthcare Consulting, LLC, an affiliate of KraftCPAs PLLC. With more than 25 years of experience in the healthcare industry, Scott consults on various areas involving third-party reimbursement, operations, and compliance for clients throughout the United States. Additionally, Scott provides expert reports and testimony for healthcare-related litigation engagements. His clients include hospitals, long-term care facilities, physicians, and other providers, as well as law firms.


Scott is an instructor with the American Institute of Healthcare Compliance to develop and teach the Medicare/Medicaid cost reporting boot camp to train individuals who assist with cost report preparation. His previous experience includes working for a Nashville-based hospital management company, a Nashville hospital system, and other CPA firms.


Sherra Hassig, BS, AAS

Sherra earned her Associate of Applied Science degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography with a specialty in vascular ultrasound from Cuyahoga Community College in Parma, Ohio. As part of the academic program, she completed extensive clinical rotations at three well-known hospitals in Northeast Ohio. Sherra went on to successfully pass the Sonography Principles & Instrumentation and the Vascular Technology exams in order to earn her Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) credential through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).


Sherra has also earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. She used knowledge from earning this degree to pursue a career in graphic design. Sherra now provides technical support and guidance to AIHC’s online students as a Certification Exam Proctor and Online Course Manager.
